Vic: Police fail to locate high rolling casino robber
MELBOURNE, Aug 23 AAP - A three-day hunt for a high rolling casino robber has failedto find any trace of the Melbourne tradesman thought to be 48-year-old Thomas Mangos, police admitted today.
Police today released three seconds of security video from Crown Casino's high-rollerroom showing the moments after Mangos allegedly robbed cashiers at gunpoint at 5am onTuesday.
The video shows a calm but unkempt Mangos allegedly walking away from two cashiersstuffing something into the front of his black bomber jacket.
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Bernie Jackson said the rest of the security footagecould not be released because it showed details of the security in the casino's MahoganyRoom.
Snr Sgt Jackson appealed to Mangos to come forward to help the police investigationinto the armed robbery and to reassure his family he was OK.
Mangos' bank accounts have not been touched since the brazen robbery, nor has he hadany contact with his two sons, both in their 20s, or his business associates.
The Bundoora divorcee was a self-employed tradesman known to be in financial difficulty.
Snr Sgt Jackson said Mangos could have fled interstate or overseas, evading the policewatch on airports.
Mangos has distant relatives in Europe and police have not discounted the possibilityhe has fled Australia on a false passport.
The suspect has no previous police record and did not hold a gun licence.
Police have no idea how he obtained the gun allegedly used in the robbery.
Snr Sgt Jackson said the ease with which Mangos allegedly pulled off his bold heistcould encourage other criminals to target the casino.
"It's always a possibility that people may try to copy this sort of offence," he tolda news conference today.
"Crown will be looking at that security issue and will hopefully rectify them."
Mangos fled the casino in a taxi, giving the unsuspecting driver a substantial tipafter being dropped off in suburban Flemington.
Police today said they had no idea where he'd gone after getting out of the taxi.
