Mayor Karen B. Johnson said the city is looking at a $4.2 million deficit heading into preparation of the 1989 budget, a gap that will force an undetermined amount of layoffs and a tax increase.
The projected deficit could be covered by a 37 percent tax increase of $25 per $1,000 of assessed value property tax increase to the present $66 per $1,000 tax rate, but Johnson has ruled out imposing such a large tax increase.
"That tax rate increase is totally unacceptable to me, so we will have to terminate some positions while trying to make the process as painless as possible," Johnson said.
