NSW: Ethanol injection could solve prostate problems

Australian men will soon have access to a new treatment for a common prostate problemthat's often confused with cancer.

Urologist MARK PLANTE of the University of Vermont in the US says a majority of menwill develop enlargement of the prostate.

Professor PLANTE says most of these will develop associated irritation or problemswhen urinating -- symptoms often wrongly associated with prostate cancer.

Professor PLANTE will outline to a conference in Perth this weekend how men with lesssevere forms of the condition can be treated with an ethanol injection into the prostate.

The procedure has been approved for use in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

Professor PLANTE says trials show the procedure is safer, cheaper and quicker thanmore invasive forms of treatment.
